31 Oct 5 Simple Steps to Boost Your Motivation
Accomplish Career Success
You could be just a few steps away from your dream job, perhaps you’re steeped in the coding wisdom of one of our Bootcamps, or maybe you’re a recent Code Institute graduate. Wherever you find yourself one thing is certain; at some point in your career, you’ll go through a period of uncertainty when your motivation wanes. But don’t worry, the key is to remain calm, we’re here to help you get over the hump.
It’s important to know that there’s no shame in feeling unmotivated. It doesn’t matter how driven you are, it’s natural to go through a phase when it’s that little bit harder to get out of bed in the morning, or maybe you’ve forgotten why you decided to take on that extra qualification or that ever-increasing workload of assignments.
The key is to remember that this time will pass: you will regain your motivation mojo. In the meantime, let’s look at some of the simple steps you can take to get back on track.
1. Remember Your Goal
Do you remember what the main motivating factor was for changing your career path? You took on this new job or this course for a reason, right? Take a few minutes to get back to basics; reflect on the reason why you made this life-changing decision. Why was it so important to you, and what have you got to lose? Put yourself in touch with your original goals; visualise where you want to be in two years and remember what your reason to succeed is.
2. Create A Why List
It sounds almost too simple to work, but writing out a comprehensive list of reasons why you chose this path can give you a great sense of achievement. All it takes is a few minutes to sit down, some honesty, and a pen and paper. If it’s hard to remember why you are where you are, this process can provide you with a clear insight into your original motivations behind this change.
3. Make A Plan
Everybody loves a good plan! When you’re going through a tough period it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Why not organise your thoughts on paper? Get in plan mode; write down a seven day plan and you’ll instantly feel in control. A mind map of what you need to get done in the coming weeks will banish any overwhelming thoughts and get you back to basics.
4. Let Others Inspire You
If your energy is waning why not look externally for some inspiration? Wrack your brains and reach out to a mentor or a friend who has excess pools of energy for the taking. People love being asked for help; don’t be afraid to connect with a trusted advisor or an old friend. If you’re in the midst of a Code Institute course why not reach out to the Code Community on Slack? You might just come away with a pep in your step and some advice to put into action.
5. Be Happy!
Constantly worrying about your lack of motivation or mulling over a major life decision can result in some sleepless nights. In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, you need to be able to switch off, relax and recuperate. What is it that makes you happy? Make sure you carve out some time for the things you love. Delineate your time off from your work or study; this will boost your mood and help you to focus.
Remember not to panic; there’s no shame in feeling unmotivated. Try one of these simple exercises today and get back on track.
